What defines a “group” and how are these groups created? You might want to think through Ho’s idea of “kinship networks” and/or Treuer’s notion of “culture.”

David Treuer, “Digital Indians: 1990-2018,” from The Heartbeat of Wounded Knee: Native America from 1890 to the Present (2019)
Karen Ho, “Biographies of Hegemony,” from Liquidated: An Ethnography of Wall Street (2009)
Prompt:In previous essays, we examined whether individuals could create societal change, and to what extent individuals were responsible for making these changes. Many of your essays took aim at the “elites” of our world, arguing that they, as a generalized whole, were responsible for stopping or subverting efforts at genuine social change. In “Biographies of Hegemony,” however, Karen Ho argues that “elites” are also individuals working within a particular social framework.
She points out that “that the particular biographies, experiences, and practices of investment bankers, who are both empowered and constrained by their cultural and institutional locations, create social change and financial hegemony on a daily basis” (Ho 163).
The actions of individuals are both defined by and create the power and identity of the group to which they belong. In a similar way, Treuer discusses how individual Native Americans are making changes that affect Native American identity as a whole.
He points out that “to be Indian today seems to be more a matter of action” (442), and that it is the actions of individuals within a particular “cultural and institutional location” that define whether or not they are “Native American.”
For essay #3, utilize ideas, terms, and quotes from Treuer and Ho to address the following question:
How are the actions of individuals both “empowered and constrained” by their position as members of a group?
Questions to get you started:
What defines a “group” and how are these groups created? You might want to think through Ho’s idea of “kinship networks” and/or Treuer’s notion of “culture.”What does it mean to be part of a group?
Can individuals be part of multiple groups? What effect would that have on their position as “empowered and constrained”?
Are individuals “empowered and constrained” in different ways when they are part of an “elite” or more powerful group, as opposed to a “subaltern” or less powerful group?
Use these questions to focus your thoughts and generate ideas as you work to answer the central question of the prompt.
What defines a “group” and how are these groups created? You might want to think through Ho’s idea of “kinship networks” and/or Treuer’s notion of “culture.”

Discuss how you felt about the news article before AND after you did your fact-checking using credible resources. Did your thoughts about the information change?

Popular Information Discussion
For this assignment  go to some social media or media site and find a “news” article to evaluate. It can be about any subject. Then:
1. Copy the news article and post it as a word file in your discussion OR provide a clickable link to the story so that we can see the original article.
2. Dig into the story as if you are an investigative reporter. Find two (2) “facts” to fact-check. Write the “fact” as stated in the article.
3. Provide the REAL information about that fact using credible sources (this part is important!) (summarize the information in about 3-4 sentences and cite where you are getting the more credible information using APA format.
If the fact provided was accurate in the original article, that’s fine, just corroborate that with credible references. Then, list whether the fact is “100% true, almost true, half true, mostly not true, 100% false” depending on what your research unveils.
4. Finally, discuss how you felt about the news article before AND after you did your fact-checking using credible resources. Did your thoughts about the information change?
Would you have been “hooked” by the original article and shared it because of how it was written or how “real” it felt? What were your thoughts about the source of the original article, did you consider that as you made your initial judgement?
Discuss how you felt about the news article before AND after you did your fact-checking using credible resources. Did your thoughts about the information change?

Describe the overall concepts of homeland security and homeland defense. Construct a response that provides the following to both homeland security and homeland defense

Drawing upon resource material provided and that discovered while conducting your own research, answer the following:
Fully describe the overall concepts of homeland security and homeland defense. Construct a response that provides the following to both homeland security and homeland defense: State this topic question in your paper.
Primary missions, tasks, responsibilities, operations, etc. for:Homeland Security andHomeland Defense.Highlight those areas that are shared between the two (what overlaps between HLS and HLD?)
Lastly, recommend a definition for homeland security.Using the overarching themes of the National Security Strategy from 2017, provide your own recommendation for new National Strategy for Counter terrorism (it must be nested under the NSS according to the principle of strategic hierarchy).
What key elements and focus areas would you suggest for the part of a new CT strategy that is domestic focused (homeland security, not overseas), and make sure to use the Ends, Ways, and Means strategy framework.

That agency is only one part of a larger Homeland Security Enterprise that includes [DHS] Departmental leaders and components [the 7 field agencies including USCG, CBP, ICE, USSS, etc], state, local, tribal, territorial and private sector partners and others.
Also remember there are many other essential federal agencies that play a role in HLS, such as the very important DOJ where the FBI is the lead agency for countering terrorism in the US (not DHS).
Technical RequirementsYour paper must be at a minimum of 5-7 pages (the Title and Reference pages do not count towards the minimum limit). You are to include/state an “Introduction” and “Conclusion” with appropriate paragraph.Scholarly and credible references should be used. A good rule of thumb is at least 2 scholarly sources per page of content.Type in Times New Roman, 12 point and double space.Students will follow the current APA Style as the sole citation and reference style used in written work submitted as part of coursework.Points will be deducted for the use of Wikipedia or encyclopedic type sources. Choose two sociological theorists to write a brief biography about (approximately 1.5 – 2 typed single-spaced pages for each of the two theorists). One theorist must be historical, and one must be contemporary.

Émile Durkheim & C Wright Mills
Choose two sociological theorists to write a brief biography about (approximately 1.5 – 2 typed single-spaced pages for each of the two theorists). One theorist must be historical, and one must be contemporary.
For each, you need to include a picture of the theorist (even if it’s only a drawing) and a bibliography, showing what sources you used for information. DO NOT cut and paste from websites into your document (this is plagiarism and a serious academic offence).
This assignment is a typical, but brief research paper using secondary and online sources. For theorist answer the following:
(1)A little bit about their lives, when they lived, and where they lived,
(2) What was happening in society at the time (political, social, economic events),
(3)What their major accomplishments .
(4)What their publications or major works .
(5) What they are best known for, (e.g., a major contribution they made to sociology or to the social sciences).
KEY POINT: Try to link their theoretical work and/or interests to the social, political, and economic times they lived in, as well as to anything that may be relevant in their personal lives. E.g.,
What was happening in society or in their personal lives that might have made them interested in researching or writing about the things they did? HINT: This question is asking you to use the sociological imagination!!
